Taiwan Pride Week: Is the Rainbow Music Festival Worth It?

Recently, I found myself in Taiwan for Taiwan Pride Week, and of course, I had to attend one of the biggest pride events on the calendar — the Rainbow Music Festival, part of Formosa Pride.

Now the question is:
Was it worth the ticket price?
Would I go again?
And should you add it to your Pride itinerary?

Let’s get into it.

What Is Formosa Pride & Rainbow Music Festival?

If you’re planning your trip around Taiwan Pride Week, here’s what you need to know:

  • Taiwan LGBT Pride (often called the biggest parade gay event in Asia) takes over Taipei every October.

  • Formosa Pride is the circuit-style party series happening alongside the parade.

  • The Rainbow Music Festival is one of its headline pride events.

Think: shirtless men, circuit DJs, dramatic lighting, and high-energy dancing.

In other words — if you love circuit parties, this is very much your scene.

Ticket Price & Location

I attended the Sunday “Pink Ball” event.

  • Ticket: 2,000 NTD (single-day pass)

  • Venue: Indoor basketball stadium

  • Location: 20–30 minutes from Ximending

Price-wise, 2,000 NTD is fairly standard for an Asian circuit party during Pride Week. It’s not cheap, but it’s not shocking either.

If you're traveling for Taiwan Pride Week, budget this in advance — pride events here sell out quickly.

Venue & Setup

The space itself was large enough to handle the crowd. There were elevated platforms in the middle of the dance floor, which looked cool in theory.

In reality?

You could feel every stomp and jump vibrating through your body. It was like dancing on a mildly unstable trampoline. Not a dealbreaker — just something I noticed.

There was a bar downstairs, though I didn’t personally try the drinks (more on that in a second).

The Vibe: What Is Rainbow Music Festival Really Like?

Let me describe the vibe as honestly as possible.

If you’ve ever been to a massive rave like Electric Daisy Carnival, you know there’s always a “gay pocket” near certain stages — where everyone is dancing… but also scanning the room.

That’s the energy here.

The Rainbow Music Festival felt like:

  • A giant gay sauna

  • Without the walking around

  • Everyone shirtless

  • Almost nobody sober

  • Lots of swaying

  • Lots of eye contact

  • A bit of hunting energy

It’s very much a circuit party atmosphere.

If that excites you, you’ll love it.

If you’re expecting a free-spirited rave with deep music immersion… you may feel a bit constrained.

My Personal Experience (And Why I Didn’t Fully Enjoy It)

Here’s the twist.

I was completely sober.

Why?
Because I had a 7:00 AM flight the next morning.

Poor planning? Yes.
Regrets? Also yes.

If you’ve been here long enough, you know I’m an ambivert. I need a little “boost” to fully unlock my extroverted side at big pride events.

And because I was sober, I felt more like an observer than a participant.

I did meet people. Everyone was generally friendly. There were definitely attractive guys. But I didn’t make that one deep vibe connection that, for me, makes a pride event unforgettable.

And that matters.

Who Will Love This Pride Event?

Let’s be fair.

If you:

  • Love circuit parties

  • Enjoy high-energy pride events

  • Want hot guys and shirtless dancing

  • Like social, flirty environments

Then yes — Rainbow Music Festival during Formosa Pride will absolutely deliver.

It is very much “circuit partying.”

No surprises. Exactly what it says on the label.

Who Might Not Love It?

If you:

  • Prefer true rave culture with music-first energy

  • Feel pressured by social comparison environments

  • Need strong personal connections to enjoy events

This event may not convert you into a circuit party lover.

It didn’t convert me.

And that’s okay.

Is Rainbow Music Festival Worth It During Taiwan Pride Week?

Here’s my honest conclusion:

✔ If you enjoy circuit parties, you will have fun.
✔ If you’re traveling for Taiwan Pride Week, it’s one of the biggest pride events happening.
✔ The crowd is attractive and energetic.

But…

For me personally?
I probably wouldn’t attend again.

Not because it’s bad.
Just because circuit culture isn’t fully my thing.

Taiwan Pride Week Travel Tips

If you’re planning your trip for Taiwan Pride Week, here’s what I recommend:

1. Plan Your Schedule Wisely

Don’t book a 7 AM flight after a pride event. Learn from me.

2. Buy Tickets Early

Formosa Pride events sell out fast.

3. Stay Near Ximending

Most Pride Week social activity centers around that area.

4. Know Your Party Style

Are you a rave person? A club person? A circuit person? A parade-only traveler?

Your experience will depend on knowing yourself.

Final Thoughts on Formosa Pride & Rainbow Music Festival

Taiwan Pride Week is incredible. The parade gay energy, the inclusivity, the international crowd — it’s one of Asia’s best pride celebrations.

The Rainbow Music Festival is a major part of that ecosystem.

It just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

If you’re coming for:

  • Hot guys

  • Circuit beats

  • Pride event spectacle

You’ll get exactly that.

If you’re coming for:

  • Emotional connection

  • Music immersion

  • Rave freedom

You might feel like something’s missing.

And that’s perfectly okay.
